Woman killed, three injured in horrific crash on Gerroa Road

A woman has died following an horrific head-on collision north of Shoalhaven Heads on Tuesday morning.

The woman was travelling north with two other women when their car collided with an oncoming sedan on Gerroa Road shortly after 10am.

The female driver and sole occupant of the southbound car is believed to be in a stable condition, after spending a period trapped in the wreckage.

Three ambulance rescue helicopters, each with an injured woman on board, departed Vic Zealand Oval within nine minutes of one another from just before midday, bound for Liverpool, Westmead and then St George hospitals.

Nowra Police Station’s Inspector Ray Stynes said a crime scene had been established and officers were investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash.

“I won’t pre-empt the investigation but it does look like one of the vehicles had crossed onto the incorrect side of the road for some reason,” he said.

“The car heading north with three women were visiting, returning to Sydney I believe. The other (woman) was a local lady.”

“As you can appreciate it was a traumatic incident to attend and like always we’ll offer all support to officers attending and we’ll wrap our arms around them like we always do as the blue family, same with the ambulance and the fire brigade,” he said.

Shoalhaven Heads resident Daryl was riding his bike on Gerroa Road when he came across the accident.

“I just went into help mode. I just did what I could. I talked to one of the ladies who was seriously injured but could still talk,” he said.

“I helped to undo her seatbelt and I just comforted her and then I went to the lady who was driving the car by herself and stayed with her (until help arrived).”

Emergency services remain on scene with Bolong Road and Gerroa Road remaining closed in both directions with local traffic in place via Coolangatta Road and Beach Road.

The road is expected to be closed for several hours and motorists are urged to avoid the area if possible.

In the wake of the crash, Inspector Stynes urged motorists to slow down and drive to the conditions.

“Be aware of your surroundings, be aware of the road conditions, drive to your capabilities and if you’re tired, take a break. Fatigue and speed are critical,” he said.
