W24News – PH – Group calls for government help for fishermen

Industry group urges government to provide more aid to local fishermen as demand for fish exports has remained low due to trade restrictions caused by the coronavirus pandemic

In a virtual press conference on Monday, Tugon Kabuhayan official Asis Perez said seafood prices fell 52% as the export market continued to suffer from transportation constraints , resulting in the loss of an important market for some fishermen depended for years

“A huge crab is usually sold for P2,500 per kilo, but now you can buy it for P1,200 per kilo in Manila It’s good for local consumers, as now they can buy quality seafood , but the export market was really difficult, ”he added

Perez, former director of the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources, noted that some supply routes to Japan and Europe – where most of the country’s tuna exports go – have been choked by suspension of flights This has resulted in lower incomes for fishermen, especially now that the demand for canned fishery products has already declined

“At the start of the pandemic there was an initial boon in demand for canned goods due to the panic in buying. But after that much of the production [lost a market] There was a a break in the supply chain, ”he said

To ease the burden on local fishermen, Perez said the government needs to invest in establishing cold storage facilities and ice factories to at least extend the shelf life of seafood This can be done with the help of the private sector

Currently, around 40% of local fishermen’s catch is spoiled due to lack of ice factories and cold storage Oversupply may even make matters worse for the industry

The Ministry of Agriculture has relied heavily on its Kadiwa program to encourage consumers to buy local food products in order to facilitate the oversupply of certain products
