W24News – CA – Americans vote early in presidential election

WASHINGTON – Americans vote early in record numbers with more than 178 million people already voting ahead of a presidential election between Democrat Joe Biden and Republican Donald Trump taking place in the shadow of the coronavirus pandemic

And although the outcome of the White House race was not known until election day on November 3 – or perhaps much later – the first hints to vote appear to favor Biden, 77, who has a double – figure ahead of Trump in national polls

Iowa, the Midwestern state where Trump, 74, held a campaign rally on Wednesday, is among states that allow voters to vote early

“I didn’t mean to do it by mail,” said Jeff Maki, a 44-year-old insurance agent, as he voted early in Newton, Jasper County. “To make sure the vote counts, I wanted to vote early in person”

“And with three weeks to go to early voting, we have 8,000 now,” Parrott said “So we will surpass that record”

Early voting began in Iowa on October 5 As of Thursday, more than 325,000 ballots had been cast in Hawkeye state, according to the University of Florida’s US Elections Project

Project maintains tally of in-person early votes and returned ballots By Thursday afternoon, a total of 178 million ballots had been cast in states reporting early totals

Election experts highlight Covid-19 crisis and expansion of postal voting for the rise of early voting, which is set to shatter the total of 47 million early votes in 2016

Trump frequently denounces postal voting as plagued by fraud, but there is no evidence of widespread irregularities with postal votes in previous elections

Michael McDonald, a political science professor at the University of Florida who heads the US Elections Project, said the early voting numbers bode well for former Vice President Biden, but there could be have a strong Trump turnout on election day

Several polls have shown Democrats more likely than Republicans to vote early due to the Covid-19 pandemic

“I cautioned that the strongly Democratic vote at this point shouldn’t be an indicator that Biden has the election [sewn up],” McDonald said in an early vote analysis on his website “Yes, the numbers are very good for Biden

“However, it is very likely that Republicans will come forward in force to vote in person,” he added

A spokeswoman for the Trump campaign told the Washington Post that the president is indeed counting on high turnout on election day

“For months, Democrats have placed all their hopes in mail-in ballots, irresponsibly scared voters off the ballot box and cannibalized their voters on Election Day in favor of mail-in ballots,” said Trump campaign spokeswoman Thea McDonald “Republicans will run in person on election day and re-elect President Trump”

According to the US Elections Project, voters on Thursday demanded 8,069 million mail-in ballots in states reporting such numbers

Of the states reporting requests to register political parties, Democrats have requested 2,366 million ballots and Republicans 1,391 million

A total of 209 million early votes were cast in Florida, 168 million in California and 162 million in Texas, according to the US Elections Project

Other states with a high number of early votes include Michigan (13 million), Virginia (114 million) and New Jersey (114 million)

More than 916,000 early votes cast in the southern state of Georgia despite long lines on the first day of this week, which saw some voters wait more than 10 hours

North Carolina began in-person early voting on Thursday, and Democratic vice presidential candidate Kamala Harris was due to travel to Asheville to speak at an early mobilization event

Harris was forced to cancel, however, after her communications director and a flight crew member tested positive for Covid-19

Early in-person voting began Tuesday in Texas, which has 38 electoral college votes and is key to Trump’s hopes of victory

Harris County, which includes the main metropolis of Houston, had a record number of early in-person voters on day one, when 128,186 voted, nearly double the 68,000 who did. four years ago

The figure was slightly lower on Wednesday – 114,996 – but still significantly higher than in 2016

“I wanted to make sure my vote was counted before anything could happen by polling day,” Afshar said
