(Photo by Eakin Howard/Getty Images) It was a rough weekend for the UNC baseball program as the Tar Heels got swept by the Clemson Tigers to end the regular season. Not much went right for UNC baseball the past week or this weekend for that matter. The Diamond Heels had a chance to really make a push to host an NCAA regional this past week with opportunities against No. 8 Coastal Carolina and No. 7 Clemson. We already have touched base on what happened in Conway against the Chanticleers. It was much of the same against the Tigers. The Tar Heels only led one time during the entire series for an inning against Clemson. In game one, it was 6-0 Tigers before the Tar Heels even scored a run. It was never close as Clemson won 14-7, and it wasn’t that close. Carolina scored four runs in the ninth to make the deficit more respectable. In game two, a three-run home run in the second inning by Patrick Alvarez gave the Diamond Heels a 3-0 lead. However, in the third inning, Clemson would get those runs back and then take the lead 4-3 in the fourth inning. The Diamond Heels made it interesting in the ninth inning when three Clemson Tigers lost the fly balls in the lights and gave Carolina an opportunity to tie the game. The Tar Heels would be able to take advantage to get a run and tie the game at four. However, the Tigers were able to make up for their mistakes and got an RBI single to win the game 5-4. Saturday’s game three was much more low scoring than the first two games with not a lot of action. Alvarez made an impressive defensive play to keep the lead within two, but the offense wasn’t there for the UNC baseball program this weekend. Vance Honeycutt was out of the lineup all weekend with what is being described as a lower-body injury, but there aren’t many details on his status. That’s a huge blow for the UNC baseball offense and one they hope doesn’t last long. Head Coach Scott Forbes provided an update on Honeycutt postgame, but there isn’t a timetable for his return. Scott Forbes said postgame he doesn’t have an update on Vance Honeycutt, who is dealing with a lower-body injury. “Medically, they tell me. He tells me if he can go. If he doesn’t tell me he can go, then he doesn’t go.” UNC baseball finishes the regular season 33-21 and 14-14 in ACC play. Next up for the Tar Heels will be the ACC Baseball Tournament in Durham, North Carolina. Seeds and game times for the ACC Tournament have been released. Stay tuned to for details!
