Earlier in the day, the US President claimed in a tweet that 2020’s presidential election could be postponed because a nationwide mail-in ballot system would create “the most INACCURATE & FRAUDULENT Election in history”. However, he did not provide evidence to back this up. During his daily briefing on Thursday, Mr Trump reiterated these claims.
Mr Trump added he does not want to wait for three months for results from mail-in ballots, because even with litigation “that can take years”.
He said: “I don’t want to see an election, so many years I’ve been watching elections, and they say the projected winner, or the winner of the election, I don’t want to see that take place and a week after November 3, or a month, or frankly, with litigation and everything else that can happen years.
“I don’t want to be waiting around for weeks and months and literally, potentially if you really did it right, years, because you’ll never know. These ballots are missing.”
“But I also don’t’ want to have to wait for three months and then find out that the ballots are all missing and the election doesn’t mean anything.

So far, six states in the US are planning to hold “all-mail” ballot elections in November.
Other states are said to be considering going down this route, according to a postal voting campaign group.
Despite his protests, Mr Trump does not actually have the authority to move the date of the election, because it is held on the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November by law.
Both houses of Congress would have to approve this first, with some Democrats, who control the House of Representatives, have already made it clear they will not support any delay to the vote.
