Covering the impact of coronavirus on the sports world
It’s been four-plus long months, but the renewal of the NBA season is officially at hand, and fittingly, the team most responsible for the NBA’s shutdown will be the first one to take the floor. When last we saw professional basketball, a game between the Utah Jazz and Oklahoma City Thunder was frantically canceled because Jazz star Rudy Gobert had tested positive for the coronavirus. That led to the hiatus we just endured, but with the league safely ensconced in its Disney bubble without any current positive tests, the Jazz will lead the league back onto the floor, in a matchup Thursday against the New Orleans Pelicans that will tip off the NBA restart.
The New Orleans Pelicans currently stand 3 1/2 games behind the Memphis Grizzlies for the No. 8 seed in the Western Conference. Finish the season within four and ahead of the rest of the lottery teams and they’ll get a shot to steal Memphis’ playoff spot in a play-in tournament. Such a battle would presumably pit No. 1 overall pick Zion Williamson against No. 2 overall pick Ja Morant.
Williamson will suit up against Utah, per Yahoo Sport’s Chris Haynes, after quarantining for four days following an excused absence to attend to a family matter. The Pelicans can’t afford to lose winnable games with the Portland Trail Blazers, San Antonio Spurs and Sacramento Kings breathing down their necks. The Jazz, without Bojan Bogdanovic, are in real danger of slipping as far down the standings as No. 7, setting up a brutal first-round matchup with the Los Angeles Clippers. The first game back also happens to be one of the most important before we reach the postseason, and fortunately, we have you covered with live updates and analysis. Game tips at 6:30 p.m. ET.
