Helicopter crashes into powerlines in NSW Riverina district

A man is in a serious condition after a helicopter crashed into powerlines in the western Riverina district of New South Wales.

The male pilot, who was the only person onboard, was treated for head injuries at the scene, and has been airlifted to Royal Melbourne Hospital.

A spokesman for Ambulance NSW said the aircraft had crashed into powerlines about 12pm on Friday, on the Steam Plains station, one of the biggest sheep farms in the state, near Conargo some three hours’ drive west of Wagga Wagga.

Three crews of paramedics, one inspector and a specialist medical team, via helicopter, were dispatched to the scene, and worked to free the man, who was trapped inside the wreckage.

Inspector Markus Zarins, the duty operations manager of NSW ambulance, said the male pilot was “the sole occupant in the helicopter.”

“Paramedics, including a specialist medical team treated him at the scene and are transporting the patient in a serious condition,” he said.
