Firefighters have been called to Chertsey on Thursday (May 25) after a fire above a shop. A total of 10 fire engines have been called to the scene on Windsor Street, according to the Surrey Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS). An aerial platform has also been brought to the blaze, which was reported to the service at 8.07am. The fire service said they have received no reports of any casualties at this time. A statement from the SFRS said: “We received reports of a fire at a residential property on Windsor Street, Chertsey at 8.07am this morning. We currently have ten fire engines, one aerial ladder platform, one water carrier and our command unit in attendance. We also have support from Surrey Police and SECAmb.” All persons are now accounted for & there are no reported casualties. Road closures are in place after we were made aware of a house fire on Windsor Street in Chertsey at around 8:15am this morning (25 May). Fire crews are currently in attendance. SurreyLive has now spoken to Davey Sewell, manager at The Abbey Tattoo which was pictured in some photographs of the fire. He said he only heard about the fire 30 minutes after it happened. He said: The roof just went up. We still don’t know how much damage has been caused. Hopefully it is just water damage. The top two flats have definitely perished. They have not given me any details. The ceiling may have collapsed in, if that’s all the damage that’s a godsend. I can’t imagine we’ll be working there for a while. SurreyLive has spoken to local businesses based near where the fire was taking place. A spokesperson for convenience store One Stop Stores realised something was happening at 8.15am when they smelt smoke before going outside to see the building was on fire. They added: We are closed due to the smoke. They are still trying to get the smoke out, the whole high street is shut still. The smoke has stopped but still in the air.
