Covering the impact of coronavirus on the sports world

The Lakers and Clippers have already given us three wire-to-wire battles. Why should Round 4 be any different? We’re halfway through the marquee game of this (second) opening night, and the Lakers are ahead of the Clippers 54-52. Anthony Davis leads the way with 20 points on 13 free-throw attempts, and he’s needed all of those points with LeBron James giving the Lakers only six points on 2-of-9 shooting. James is now 25-of-69 from the field against the Clippers this season.

If he doesn’t pick it up, Kawhi Leonard will punish the Lakers. He has 19 points on nine free-throw attempts of his own. Paul George has 11 points of his own, but with Lou Williams and Montrezl Harrell out, the Clippers just aren’t getting supplementary scoring. Marcus Morris and Ivica Zubac, both starters, are scoreless, and the bench has contributed only 12 points in total.

Tonight’s battle is just as close as the first three, and fortunately, we’ve got you covered the rest of the way with live updates and analysis.

The Clippers have now outscored the Lakers 14-1 in the five minutes of the third quarter. The Lakers have been completely unable to generate offense.

Back-to-back triples from Paul George have the Clippers up six, their biggest lead of the night.

A missed lob encapsulates what has been a very hard night for Ivica Zubac. He remains scoreless.

They’ve done so all season, but it’s especially evident against the Clippers: the Lakers’ big men do an excellent job of defending the perimeter.

It’s 54-52 Lakers at the half. LeBron James is now 25-of-69 from the field in seven halves against the Clippers, only 36.2%. He has six points so far tonight. Anthony Davis has been incredible tonight. The Lakers need LeBron to support him as a scorer.

13 Free throw attempts for Anthony Davis in the first half. 12 makes. Bar none, he has been the best player on the floor so far tonight. This is exactly what the Lakers need out of him to win the title.

Anthony Davis has struggled significantly in the Kawhi Leonard matchup. However, when he’s been switched onto Paul George tonight, he’s been sensational. That’s something to watch for a potential playoff matchup. Theoretically, if that sustained, the Lakers could accept big numbers from Kawhi if it meant slowing down the other Clipper star.

Big three from Paul George. The two teams are 6-of-25 combined from behind the line, with both sides only hitting three apiece. The Lakers will win the battle in the paint every time in this matchup. The Clippers need to win the shooting battle.

One of the lessons we’re starting to learn in this game: The Lakers aren’t a great matchup for Ivica Zubac. He’s up to three fouls and has no points. Anthony Davis is having little trouble with him.

Paul George managed to get his feet set in microseconds to draw that charge on LeBron. He’s an excellent transition defender, and he just displayed why.

What a finish by Dion Waiters. That’s the sort of creativity that had been lacking on Laker bench units.

Kawhi Leonard is roasting the Lakers right now. He’s up to 15 points and has played stellar defense against LeBron James.

Foul aside, That was excellent defense by Kyle Kuzma on Kawhi Leonard. He’s looked good in limited opportunities in that matchup this season. If he can guard Kawhi for stretches, it would make an enormous difference in the playoffs.

Kawhi Leonard’s famously strong relationship with rims continues. A couple of friendly bounces knocks in his 3-pointer and suddenly, the Clippers have the lead down to seven.
