In a long-awaited trailer released Tuesday, Sony Pictures studios revealed the first footage of “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” the third episode of the series’ second reboot, with all of the previous cast. Did you not understand anything in this introduction? We explain everything in this article.
The history of Spider-Man in the movies is about as tangled as a canvas of the famous superhero. There were first three films directed by Sam Raimi, with Tobey Maguire as Peter Parker, the teenager bitten by a mutant spider who gave him superhuman powers. Then, the costume was taken up by Andrew Garfield in two other films, entitled “The Amazing Spider-Man”: it is the director Marc Webb who took care of filming this new version of the hero, which started again from zero since his origins. The first is a success, the second is considered a failure, which chills the Sony studio on the commercial potential of these films, expensive to produce with uncertain results.
Meanwhile, in the competition, we are seeing the opposite phenomenon: since 2008, Marvel Studios has entered the dance, with “Iron Man” then a slew of other successes in the cinema, by adapting its characters on a large scale. screen, from Captain America to Doctor Strange to Hulk and Thor. Spider-Man is an exception: while he is indeed a character from the Marvel Universe in the comics, his movie rights still belong to Sony.
An agreement is finally reached between the two studios, which allows Marvel to integrate the New York hero in his films, while reserving for Sony the films only centered on him. Basically: Spider-Man can be a supporting character in the Marvel movies, but he can only be the main character in the Sony movies. First attempt in 2016 with “Captain America: Civil War”, where a new Peter Parker played this time by Tom Holland makes a shattering appearance in the universe of the Marvel films (at 2’13 “in this trailer).
He will come back to it in “Avengers: Infinity War”. In parallel, Sony produced two films: “Spider-Man: Homecoming” then “Spider-Man: Far from Home”. Each time, the storylines are assumed to take place in the Marvel movie universe, and the events that took place there (such as the death of a certain character) have a direct impact on Spider-Man’s story. One-sided influence … At least so far.
Because as the trailer for “Spider-Man: No Way Home” confirms, the spider-man will soon weigh as much on the Marvel universe as the latter has weighed on him in the last two films. We discover a hard-pressed Peter Parker, ready to do anything to protect his loved ones and his identity, even if it means invoking with Doctor Strange (a character from the Marvel films, him, please follow a little) forces which exceed him and to alter the very fabric of reality.
This is where all the trick lies, scriptwriting but also commercial. By integrating the concept of “multiverse” into the Marvel films (a set of parallel universes already mentioned in the film “Doctor Strange” and the “Loki” series), the two studios are not only opening the door to hundreds of future versions. of their characters, but they also allow (and this is completely new in the cinema) to integrate into the “official” story (“canon” as the fans say) everything that happened in the previous films. Including the various actors who have played the characters in previous films.
The trailer thus makes us hear the voice and the sardonic laughter of Willem Dafoe (the Green Goblin in the very first film of 2002), brings back from the dead the flamboyant Alfred Molina (alias Otto Octavius in the second film of 2004), and hints at an appearance of the Sandman (played by Thomas Haden Church) and Electro (played by Jamie Foxx). In short, a compilation of the best villains from previous films.
Better yet, since the trailer aired, fans have been looking for clues to the presence of actors who also played Peter Parker: Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield. Since who says multiple universes also says multiple versions of Spider-Man. An idea that had already been brilliantly exploited by the animated film “Spider-Man: New Generation”.
We can even dream of new Spider-Man films with the characters and actors of the old Spider-Man films, since the pretext of parallel universes can justify just about everything. And the idea could also inspire other studios: why not imagine, for example, in the competitor DC (who has also developed multiple universes in his comics), a film bringing together the different Batman of the history of cinema ?
In the meantime, at Marvel, to know who will or not be part of this amazing family reunion between actors and heroes from different universes and different generations, we will have to wait for the release of the film “Spider-Man: No Way Home”, on December 15th.
