November 1 is a public holiday in France. But do you know why All Saints’ Day is celebrated? lepetitjournal.com brings you the explanation of its history and origins.

All Saints’ Day is one of the eleven public holidays in France listed in the Labor Code. November 1 corresponds in fact to the Catholic feast of All Saints. This day is also a public holiday in other Catholic countries, such as Ireland, Austria or Italy. But what does it correspond to?

As the website of the Catholic Church in France explains, “As its name suggests, All Saints’ Day is the feast of all saints. Each November 1, the Church thus honors the innumerable crowd of those who have been living and luminous witnesses of Christ. Before All Saints’ Day, there was from the 4th century the feast of the martyrs. It then spread to all Saints and was initially celebrated on May 13.

It was not until the 8th century that Pope Gregory III chose November 1 as the date for the celebration of all saints, known and unknown. November 1 was not selected at random, as the Celtic peoples chose this date to celebrate Samain, a feast dedicated to the dead and celebration of the New Year. Around 825, Pope Gregory IV ordered that All Saints’ Day be celebrated throughout Christendom.

November 1 is the occasion in France to go to the graves, and yet the commemoration of the dead officially takes place on November 2. In Mexico, El Día de los Muertos is celebrated on November 2, an opportunity to reunite with family and to celebrate missing members.
