Clint Eastwood in White Hunter, Black Heart, a 1989 drama, based on the set of John Huston’s The African Queen.
In the early 1950s, a director came to Uganda to shoot an adventure feature film. Arte is showing one of Clint Eastwood’s most underrated films on Sunday, September 5 at 8:55 p.m. Be careful, this text reveals certain elements of the plot.
Screened at the Cannes Film Festival in 1990, White Hunter, Black Heart is one of Clint Eastwood’s best – and one of the most underrated – films. This is an adaptation of a novel by Peter Viertel, published in 1953, which chronicles the preparations for The African Queen (1953), a film by John Huston which was one of the screenwriters. In the early 1950s, therefore, a director named John Wilson – played by Clint – traveled with his team to Uganda for a film. From the opening, it is John Huston, a distinguished horseman, who seems to emerge from the British countryside in the early morning, red costume and galloping horse. Clint Eastwood takes on his account several personality traits of the director of The African Queen, adventurer and maverick, boxer and drinker, both unpredictable and megalomaniac. Even his characteristic diction, emphasizing vowels.
