SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – West Jordan High School basketball coach Mason Sawyer tragically lost several family members in a car accident caused by a sandstorm on Interstate 15.

The I-15 was locked in both directions for several hours after the crash, which occurred around 4:30 p.m. Sunday near Milepost 152, between the Kanosh and Fillmore exits.

Traffic going south has been diverted at the Meadow exit (# 158). Drivers should travel through Meadow and then south on State Route 133 to Kanosh. Traffic can then come back south on I-15 at Kanosh Driveway (# 148).

Soldiers said the south lanes in the area will be closed for several hours while UHP conducts its investigation.

“We’re still looking for that The cause of what ultimately happened, but (the) first report was that visibility was very poor and several cars crashed, ”said UHP Sgt. Cameron Roden. “In fact, we may have had more crashes that we didn’t take into account. If anyone is involved, we ask them to contact the Nephi Highway Police and let us know that they were involved. ”

Authorities said 15-year-old Cameron Valentine was in a vehicle. He was originally rushed to hospital in critical condition but died Monday morning.

Richard and Maricela Lorenzon were a married couple in a different car. Both were pronounced dead on the scene.

Then there were five members of the same extended family in an SUV who lost their lives.

On Monday, KSL-TV spoke to Shannon Mortenson who lost her brother, sister-in-law, two nephews and a niece in the crash.

“My brother Race is the most entertaining person there is – always silly, always teasing, always funny. And Kortni is simply the best mom I know, just great with her children and always a pleasure to be around. She’s never upset or in a bad mood, she just always picks up everyone around her, “said Mortenson.

” Franki was 2. She was valued in our family, “Mortenson continued. “We had Riggins who was 6 and Ryder who was 12. Ryder is a performer; he played all the time. He was great on stage and a very captivating person. Riggins started by filling his father’s shoes, playing all kinds of sports he could and really excelling.

“I’m just grateful for the time we had to spend with them,” she said.

Both live in St. George and were on their way home from a family reunion at Bear Lake.

One child in the SUV survived the accident – 3-year-old Blue Sawyer. He is currently in the primary school children hospital, luckily he is recovering.
