An intense band of rain causing severe falls shattered southeast Queensland up to 88mm overnight.

The Sunshine Coast will be hit hardest by the violent cell that continues to hover over the area. Bundilla takes 88 mm, Upper Doonan 87 mm and Coolum 68 mm.

The Gold Coast has also canceled periods of severe falls up to 49mm in the north end of town at Monterey Keys and 43mm in the hinterland at Upper Springbrook.

The rain is expected to continue until Saturday. Up to 60mm is forecast for the Sunshine Coast, 30mm for the Gold Coast and 25mm for Brisbane.

The Bureau of Meteorology warns that there will be moderate to locally severe falls on Saturday, likely in the morning, and thunderstorms may also occur.

The showers are expected to continue for the long weekend. On Sunday, up to 35mm is expected in parts of the southeast and another 10mm on Monday.
