Bobby Finke of the USA won gold in the debut of the men’s 800 meter freestyle swim at the Tokyo Aquatics Center.

Italian Gregorio Paltrinieri took silver after leading most of the race , while the bronze went to Mykhailo Romachuk from Ukraine.

It was an exciting end. The German Florian Wellbrock took over the lead from Paltrinieri in the last flip, Finke lurked back in fourth. But at the end of the 16-lap race, the American turned a breathtaking speed boost and overtook all three swimmers in front of him to take gold.

Finke’s winning time was 7 minutes, 41.87 seconds, just 0.24 ahead of Paltrinieri. Romachuk finished the race in 7: 42.33 minutes, relegating Wellbrock to fourth place.

The men’s 800 freestyle was added to the Olympic program for the Tokyo Games, marking the first time the men had been in one Completed an approximate distance of 880 yards at the 1904 St. Louis Games.
