Twitter is taking a break from its certification system,
only a few days after making it official. In question ? Too many requests. The
social network fails to keep up with the onslaught of requests it receives via a form filled out by users, reports Presse-Citron.
In a Twitter post on May 28, the US giant swears it will reopen the requests soon. This should make it possible to respond to two concerns on the part of users. On the one hand, the certification of the account has been rolled out gradually, so that some have not even had the opportunity to apply for lack of a form available to them. On the other hand, the last time Twitter “took a break” from account certification, it lasted almost four years. In 2017, the social network certified the account of a white supremacist, which sparked controversy.
We’re rolling in verification requests. So we gotta hit pause on accepting any more for now while we review the ones that have been submitted. (we pinky swear)
According to Presse-Citron, the implementation of this new certification was not the most successful for other reasons. Some have obtained the blue badge to guarantee certification. But others, who met all the award criteria, were turned down, without any justification.
In short, the blue “certified” badge proves the authenticity of the account considered to be of public interest, and of the person behind it. Six categories of accounts are eligible: government; companies, brands and organizations; press organizations and journalists; entertainment; sports and games; and activists, organizers and other influential figures, recalls The Verge.
Difficult to determine when applications will be reopened. “At the moment, while the acceptance of requests is paused, the deployment of application access is also paused. As soon as applications are open again, we will resume deployment of access to the application process, “the social network explains on its blog.
