I Alone Can Fix It, the new Donald Trump book by Carol Leonnig and Philip Rucker, quotes Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Mark Milley, who repeatedly compares his boss to Adolph Hitler and shares his belief that he is his Position in the military must use to prevent a coup.

The former president makes three main points in his response to Milley. First, he calls Milley a terrible attitude towards Donald Trump, which Trump claims about many of his attitudes. In this case, Trump takes the extra step and explains why he’s so bad at hiring people: He only hired Milley because Milley was hated by another horrific Trump job.

I’ve never run a big company but I’m pretty confident that hiring people out of spite for extremely high positions is generally not a sensible approach to talent acquisition. It’s also worth noting that hiring quality staff is an extremely important aspect of the president’s job, and Trump’s repeated boasting that he does that aspect seems almost like an admission of disqualification.

Second, Trump praises the Lafayette massacre Square when police attacked peaceful protesters who were gathering in a public space, describing Milley’s regret for the episode as evidence that Milley was being done by the things Trump asked for in the job.

Third, he claims : “If I wanted to do a coup, one of the last people I want to do it with would be General Mark Milley.” This point stems from the previous two: Trump complains that he has not hired generals who are the kind of people who could carry out a military coup.

All of these points confirm Milley’s assumption that Trump is a threat to the Republic rather than refuting it, and Miley got in the way.

Oddly enough, Trump doesn’t respond to Milley’s reported statements that he was “the Gospel of the Leader,” planned a “Reichstag fire,” and so on. These comments seem to fit into a pattern.

Let’s start with the obvious premise that Donald Trump is not Hitler, never was Hitler, and even under the bleakest scenario will never be Hitler. We can think of many terrifying outcomes, including a resurgence of Trump ending America’s democratic experiment that lags far behind a world war and industrialized genocide. History has produced many racist leaders who hate democracy. Only one of them wreaked as much destruction as Hitler did.

It is noticeable how often the Hitler comparison appears in relation to Trump – not from his enemies, but from members of his own inner circle. Matthis implicitly compared Trump’s beliefs with Nazi methods:

Instructions from the military departments to our troops prior to the Normandy invasion reminded soldiers that “the Nazi slogan for annihilating us … was: ‘Divide and conquer’ this crisis overcome – confident we are better than our policies.

Donald Trump is the first president in my life who doesn’t try to unite the American people – he doesn’t even pretend to try.

John Kelly, Trump’s former chief of staff, recalled Trump telling him, “Well, Hitler did a lot of good things” and insisting after encountering opposition.

Trump is not Hitler, but probably there is negative correlation between the quality of a president’s leadership and the number of his advisors that he reminds of Hitler.

According to reports, Trump’s second wife told her lawyer that Trump had a book with Hitler’s speeches in d he kept near his bed. Trump’s denial at the time had a strange ring to it: “If I had these speeches and I don’t say I do, I would never read them.” In fact, Trump has one point: It is plausible to believe that he would read any book.

Nevertheless, the sentence structure is the same. If I had a book on Hitler. If I planned a coup.
