Six years later, the “historic” trial of the attacks of November 13, 2015 opens this Wednesday at 12:30 pm in the heart of the capital. The trial, which will take place over nine months, is to try a total of twenty defendants, suspected of being involved to varying degrees in the preparation of the bloodiest jihadist attacks in France. Many victims will attend the hearings. Invited this Wednesday morning on LCI, the Minister of the Interior at the time, Bernard Cazeneuve, also fears this trial. “I believe that what binds public officials and victims is the memory of this tragedy and we will have to relive these moments during this trial,” he said. “I dread, like most of them, that I have to do this.”

The former minister, who was dining with his family when the first explosion took place near the Stade de France, in Saint-Denis, was very marked by this series of attacks. “When you were Minister of the Interior during a period when a very high level of terrorist threat weighed on the country and on the European Union, when many attacks were perpetrated during this period and you had to to face, the images which remain present in your mind and what you have experienced in the depths of yourself do not leave you anymore “, assures Bernard Cazeneuve to Élisabeth Martichoux.

Today, like each of the victims, he awaits answers. “First that the process of radicalization which presided over these acts can be exposed, understood, qualified and condemned for what it is. I believe that the victims expect a lot to understand what may have gone through their heads of these defendants, “he maintains. “The trial must then make it possible to understand what happened during these events. What was their progress? What was the role of the public authorities? How did they act?” Asks Bernard Cazeneuve.

The former Minister of the Interior also claims to be ready to take his share of responsibility, conceding that there were “of course” failures on the side of the authorities. He cites as an example the absence of a report of Salah Abdeslam in the file of wanted persons. Bernard Cazeneuve, on the other hand, wanted to denounce once again on LCI the supposed dysfunctions of the government pointed out in a report broadcast on Arte. “When a report airs on a public service channel in which someone anonymously claims that former Prime Minister Manuel Valls asked the RAID not to intervene because the BRI was run by someone who could to support him in the presidential elections, it is lamentable. It is pure defamation, it is very serious “, he launches while affirming that Georges Fenech, who is at the origin of this report,” must continue political objectives “.

“I want this trial to be an opportunity to understand, to know, and I want, like the victims, that the defendants speak. But I have doubts that they will do it,” regrets Bernard Cazeneuve. “It is unbearable for the victims. Their silence is not only the sign of their cowardice, but is the sign of the total absence of otherness which presides over the relationship they have with others,” he continues. “And even when we claim the justice of God, that does not prevent us from being able to account to Men for the acts we have committed. They are incapable of doing so because they do not have the courage. to take responsibility for what they did. “

From this Wednesday noon, some 550 people will take place in a specially built room in the courthouse in Paris. At the opening of the hearing, it is undoubtedly towards Salah Abdeslam that all eyes will turn. The 31-year-old Franco-Moroccan is the “tenth man”, the only surviving member of the commandos guided by the Islamic State (IS) group which left 130 dead and more than 350 wounded in Saint-Denis and Paris.

Ten other defendants will also take place in the box alongside Salah Abdeslam, three others, under judicial supervision, will appear free. Six others finally are judged by default, including the principal and veteran of the jihad Oussama Atar, and the French “voices” of the claim of the IS, the brothers Fabien and Jean-Michel Clain, all three presumed dead in Syria .
