The organizers of the Tour of Lombardy unveiled on Tuesday a new route that is both selective and spectacular. On October 9, between Como and Bergamo, the riders will face six climbs including the Bergamo Alta hill, just before the finish, to complete a total of 4,500 vertical meters during the race.
Note that the Mur de Sormano, and especially its dangerous descent, are no longer on the menu. The images of the last edition, when the young Belgian (21 years old) Remco Evenepoel had fallen into a ravine, projected over the parapet of a bridge, still haunt all cyclists and in particular Belgians since Philippe Gilbert, in 2012 , world champion’s jersey on the back, Jan Bakelants and Laurens de Plus, in 2017, fell in the same descent.
This time, the runners will start with the Ghisallo (on the Asso side) and then descend to the shores of Lake Como. Then, entering the province of Bergamo, they will have to swallow a continuous succession of climbs and descents: the Roncola (with slopes of up to 17%), then the climbs of Berbenno, Dossena, Zambla Alta and Passo di Ganda for a total vertical drop exceeding 4,400 m over 239 km.
For this last monument of the 2021 season, the field will be prestigious since for the moment are announced: the double winner of the Tour de France Tadej Pogacar, his compatriot Primoz Roglic (who has just won a 3rd consecutive Vuelta), Remco Evenepoel, returned in Very good form after nine months of convalescence, Jonas Vingegaard as well as veterans Vincenzo Nibali (winner in 2015) and Chris Froome.
On the French side, Thibaut Pinot, who is back in shape, David Gaudu and Aurélien Paret-Peintre are among the entries.
