Top Gun: Maverick producer Jerry Bruckheimer has revealed that Tom Cruise insisted that Val Kilmer be back as Iceman for the sequel.

This info comes to us from People, who tells us that J. Bruckheimer explained how Tom Cruise was the driving force behind Val Kilmer’s return to his role for the Top Gun sequel.

Over 35 years later, Top Gun fans are going to get to see Maverick (Tom Cruise) and Iceman (Val Kilmer) reunited on the big screen for the Top Gun release on November 15.

“He said, ‘We need Val, he has to come back. We have to have it in the movie, ‘”J.Bruckheimer tells People. “It was the engine. We all wanted it, but Tom was determined that if he had to do another Top Gun, Val would be one of them. “

J. Bruckheimer goes on to say that Kilmer is “a great actor and a good person,” and says Kilmer and Cruise’s reunion was “very moving”.

Val Kilmer’s son Jack Kilmer also chatted with People, saying his father was “so thrilled” to be back with his character and that Top Gun: Maverick honored Iceman’s legacy.

“I’m ready Tom – I still have my Top Gun license plate,” he wrote. “I’m still in good shape! I can do it. “

A year later, we learned that Kilmer would indeed have the role of Iceman in Top Gun: Maverick. We’re curious to see how their meeting will go on the big screen.
