Naomi Brändle will not compete in the Olympic kayak-mono final. The 20-year-old Thurgovian took 18th place in the semi-finals. Brändle was playing his first major competition in Tokyo. The experience acquired on the Kasai site will be invaluable to him in three years in Paris.

Noè Ponti failed 6 hundredths from a place in the final of the 200m butterfly. The 20-year-old Ticino clocked the 10th time in the semi-finals, in 1’55”37. Fifth over the distance at the European Championships in May, Noè Ponti remained 0”32 from his Swiss record which allowed him to take 5th place in the series on Monday evening.

Maria Ugolkova failed in exactly the same way as Noè Ponti, for 6 hundredths. The disappointment is great for Maria Ugolkova who, at 32, will probably no longer have the opportunity to shine on the Olympic stage. The 2018 European bronze medalist swam in 2’10”65 on Tuesday morning, 0”61 from her Swiss record which allowed her to take 5th place in the heats.

Belinda Bencic will play in the quarterfinals of the Olympic tournament. The St-Galloise (WTA 12) qualified by dominating the Czech Barbora Krejcikova (11) 1-6 6-2 6-3. She will challenge Russian Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova (18) for a place in the semi-finals.

Nicola Spirig did not manage to get a new medal in his last Olympic triathlon. The 39-year-old from Zurich, Olympic champion in 2012 and London and vice-champion in Rio 2016, finished in 6th place. The only other Swiss in the running, Jolanda Annen finished 19th.

Jolanda Neff crushed the Olympic cross-country event in Izu, leading a historic Swiss treble. She won ahead of Sina Frei and Linda Indergand for an unexpected triple feat.
