Dark day for Thomas Lüthi (Kalex) on the occasion of the Moto2 Grand Prix of Aragon. The Bernese crashed in the third round of a race won by Raul Fernandez.
Like several other drivers, Lüthi made a mistake. The 34-year-old Emmentalois, then 17th, saw his race stop on the 5th lap. Rather well off considering his 16th place on the grid and recovered in the points after the start, Lüthi then fell back before his fall.
With five races to go, the fight rages on at the top of the championship. Despite a broken pastern, Raul Fernandez won sovereignly ahead of Remy Gardner. The Australian now leads by 39 points over his Spanish rival. Marco Bezzecchi, 3rd in the World Championship, fell, as did the pole sitter and 4th in the standings, Sam Lowes.
There was also some breakage in Moto3. The top two in the championship, Spaniards Pedro Acosta and Sergio Garcia, both crashed. These mistakes benefited Italian Dennis Foggia (Honda).
However, Acosta retains the lead in the championship with 46 points ahead of Garcia thanks to the five victories already won in his first season in Moto3.
Novak Djokovic has the opportunity to close the debate on Sunday in New York.
