Ontario Prime Minister Doug Ford will make an announcement on Wednesday when the province launches its COVID-19 passport system.

Health Secretary Christine Elliott and Attorney General Sylvia Jones will join the premier for the announcement at Queen’s Park.

Ford and ministers are expected to provide an update on the launch of the vaccine in Ontario, as well as an update on the introduction of COVID-19 vaccination certificates.

Ontario’s new COVID-19 vaccine certification system now requires guests at restaurants, nightclubs, cinemas, gyms, sports facilities and other venues to present a full vaccination certificate along with government identification.

Medical certificates for medical exemptions are accepted. Companies that fail to adhere to the certification program and customers who provide false information can be fined.

In Ontario, more than 85 percent of people 12 years and older have at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine in the province, and approximately 79 percent of the general population have both doses.
