The Netherlands today accepted the Serum Institute of India’s Covishield vaccine for travel to their country, ANI news agency reported.
Previously, nine European nations are accepting Covishield vaccines for travel to their countries, sources said Thursday. Austria, Germany, Slovenia, Greece, Iceland, Ireland and Spain are among the countries that allow travel for people who have taken Covishield vaccines, the sources said.
Separately, Estonia has confirmed that it will recognize all vaccines approved by the Indian government for Indian travel to that country, the sources said.
India has already asked EU member states to check individually whether Indians who have taken Covishield and Covaxin vaccines and want to travel to Europe are considering individually.
The European Union’s digital Covid certificate or “Green Pass” will come into force on Thursday to facilitate free movement during the COVID-19 pandemic. In this context, people who have taken vaccines approved by the European Medicines Agency (EMA) are exempt from travel restrictions within the EU.
The individual member states have the flexibility to accept vaccines approved at national level or recognized by the World Health Organization (WHO).
In India, there were concerns that people taking Covishield and Covaxin vaccinations are unlikely to be eligible to travel to European Union member states under the Green Pass program.
The EU Digital Covid Certificate or the “Green Pass” is mandatory for travel to European countries and the document serves as proof that a person has been vaccinated against COVID-19.
An EU official said Tuesday that individual member states of the European Union will have the option to accept World Health Organization (WHO) -approved vaccines such as Covishield in order to receive the block’s digital Covid certificate.
