(Houston) Tyrod Taylor threw two touchdown passes and for an overhead gain of 291 yards, helping the Houston Texans defeat the Jacksonville Jaguars 37-21 on Sunday.
Taylor took the helm in the attack on the Texans after quarterback Deshaun Watson’s future darkened due to sexual assault lawsuits filed by 22 women.
“It was fun,” Taylor said of the game. It was never about me. It was about coming in and doing everything I could to help the team win. ”
Expectations for the Texans might have seemed low without Watson and as star defensive end J. J. Watt left for Arizona, but Taylor and the ground game made the Jaguars gray haired.
“We don’t give a damn if you doubt us,” Texans forward Mark Ingram said. We believe in ourselves. We believe we have what it takes to be successful. ”
Trevor Lawrence, the first pick in the last NFL Draft, amassed 332 yards for the Jaguars. He threw three touchdown passes, but was also the victim of three interceptions.
Lawrence often threw over completely free receivers, but he also wasn’t helped by many fumbles on fine passes.
It was also the NFL debut for Jaguars head coach Urban Meyer. He lost his opening opener after winning 17 in a row as a varsity head coach.
Meyer’s streak was stopped by another head coach who was in his early days in the NFL. After several decades as an assistant, David Culley, 65, was hired by the Texans.
“We expected to win,” Culley said. We are not surprised because we played good football. ”
Receiver Brandin Cooks had 132 yards and Ingram, who was playing in his first game with the Texans, added 85 rushing yards and a touchdown.
Ingram gave the Texans a 7-0 lead with seven minutes remaining in the first quarter. He crossed the goal line with a one-yard rush.
The Houston troops extended their lead to 14-0 when Taylor joined David Johnson for a seven-yard touchdown.
Lawrence orchestrated a great offensive streak which he capped off with a 22-yard touchdown pass to Chris Manhertz in the second quarter.
The Texans added three points to their total a few games after Justin Reid intercepted a pass from Lawrence. A little later in the second quarter, it was Vernon Hargreaves who pulled off a theft at Lawrence’s expense, which led to a field goal of 26 yards.
“I love Trevor and we all love him,” Meyer said. Trevor will improve week by week. Attacking football is about 11 guys who have to do their jobs. ”
The Texans put the game out of reach in the second half. Taylor joined Cooks for a long 52-yard first down and he found Danny Amendola in the end zone for an eight-yard touchdown that made it 27-7.
