A massive explosion in Canberra damaged several restaurants and brought a man to the hospital.

Security cameras captured the huge explosion in a shop front on Rae Street, Belconnen on the ACT around 7:30 p.m. Monday night.

The video shows the building transforming into a fireball, with a sudden explosion hurling metal debris and broken glass meters far into a nearby parking lot.

A kebab shop was destroyed in the explosion, which started a fire which caused serious damage to a number of nearby restaurants.

“There are many local food stalls so we are of course very grateful that only one person was injured,” Emily McCallum, assistant inspector for ACT police, told reporters .

Residents were asked to close the windows and turn off the air conditioning as black smoke was rising.
