Al Amerat (Oman): After Bangladesh has done enough over the years to lose the underdog, the formidable Bangladesh will start the qualifying round as favorites in Group B when it faces its T20 World Cup campaign against Scotland on Sunday opened.

Bangladesh was in the first round alongside Scotland, Oman and Papua New Guinea. Given their recent form, they are expected to lead the group and qualify for the Super 12 stage.

Bangladesh enters the tournament with nine T20I wins in the calendar year, only behind South Africa, which has twelve.

Indeed, since losing to New Zealand in March away from home, Bangladesh has staged victories against Zimbabwe (2-1), Australia (4-1) and New Zealand (3-2). And if they manage to qualify, Bangladesh will compete with India, Afghanistan, New Zealand, Pakistan and the group winners in the Super 12, and that should be incentive enough for Bangladesh.

The T20 World Cup was not a happy one Hunting ground for Bangladesh. After their success in the first edition in 2007 when they made it into the Super 8, the Tigers did not record a single win in the 2009, 2010 and 2012 editions.

Bangladesh returned to victory in 2014 when the Event was expanded to 16 teams, leading Group A in the first round, only to lose all four games in the Super 10 stage.

It was a similar story in 2016 when they came after a devastating loss collapsed in heartbreak against India.

But Bangladesh took shape just at the right time and is rightly sixth in the ICC T20I team standings, ahead of Australia, the West Indies and Afghanistan.

Their series wins this year against Australia and New Zealand – their first series victories against both nations – are proof of how well they will play in 2021.

With a mix of experience and youth in the team, Bangladesh has all the ingredients to get deep into the tournament.

Scotland, on the other hand, would take part in the T20 World Championship for the fourth time.

Scotland’s captain Kyle Coetzer is expecting George Munsey, who was in good shape recently, to be at his best.

Coetzer, Calum MacLeod and Richie Berrington, who are in Who reached 82 in a win over Zimbabwe on September 9th, will assist the batting department and advise from former English batsman Jonathan Trott.
