The clash between the Sydney Swans and the GWS Giants on Sunday night was overshadowed by a massive COVID drama that forced players and staff into isolation.
As the recent outbreak in Victoria continues to intensify now a total of 15 players and staff excluded from the clash at Metricon after attending the Australia-France rugby union match recently.
News broke less than half an hour after kick-off as the Swans and Giants were now forced to make big changes.
The AFL released a statement on Sunday evening confirming the news after the Victorian health authorities reclassified.
“The AFL confirms that several players and staff members of the GWS GIANTS and Sydney Swans, who took part in the Wallabies v France Rugby game, have now been classified as Level 2 contacts, “the newspaper said Message.
“A group of six Sydney Swans players and staff along with a group of nine GWS Giants players and staff entered rugby through Gate 7 of the venue and were seated in rows 25-42 of Zone 2, which has now been restored. Classified as a Level 2 Exposure Site by the Victorian Department of Health.
“Any of these players and staff currently in Queensland who are subject to the requirements of the Queensland Department of Health must be isolated until notified by the Department.
“None of these players or staff will be taking part in today’s game at Metricon Stadium.
“The AFL has notified the Queensland government and is acting in accordance with its instructions.
“The Victorian Department of Health continues to contact those directly affected with further updates.
“The GWS Giants vs. Sydney Swans game continues as planned.”
