A surfer died Sunday after being bitten by a shark on a surfing beach on Australia’s east coast, paramedics said.

The incident occurred on Emerald Beach, about 550 km (342 miles) north from Sydney.

“Despite all the efforts of bystanders, paramedics and other emergency services, the patient unfortunately died at the scene,” said New South Wales Ambulance on his Twitter account.

The beach, about 20 km north of Coffs Harbor, was closed following the incident, officials from the Coffs Harbor Lifeguards said.

The surfer is believed to be in his late 20s and was bitten on the arm, media reported.

According to the University of’s International Shark Attack File Florida ranked Australia behind the United States in the number of unprovoked shark encounters with humans in 2019.
