South Australia will be the first jurisdiction in the nation to extend the rollout of Covid-19 vaccines to young people.

Prime Minister Steven Marshall announced on Monday that anyone over the age of 16 working in regional Areas who lived in one of 35 vaccination clinics in a country could book their first dose as early as 9 a.m. on Tuesday.

“South Australia continues to vaccinate its population at the highest per capita rate of any mainland country, so it’s fantastic to see the rollout being extended,” he said.

“By expanding access to existing clinics, opening more clinics, and improving the supply of vaccines to our GPs, we are continuing to lead the country with our vaccine rollout.”

Nicola Spurrier, SA chief public health officer, said these country hospitals have the capacity and staff to deliver more vaccines well ahead of the national timeframe.

She said those who wanted to be vaccinated would have to provide proof of their area of residence in order to get the bite.

“The main reason is … the clinics are already set up and staffed (and) we have all of the 1a and 1b vaccinations,” she said.

“Instead of closing these clinics until we move on, it was a much more sensible idea to keep this momentum and use the resources currently available.”

South Australia recorded a new Covid-19 infection on Monday, who is a returned traveler in hotel quarantine.
