South China Sea: Experts claim US-China military conflict over Taiwan could arise in disputed waters

As tensions persist over the situation in Taiwan and the South China Sea, other nations involved are also growing louder. China’s Foreign Ministry recently issued a warning against Japan as its officials will hold talks with their Taiwanese counterparts.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin said Japan must stop meddling in China’s internal affairs, which are Taiwan be involved. China has claimed Taiwan is a breakaway province and part of the mainland, even though the island nation has had a democratic government for some time. Taipei has resisted such claims.

Wang’s comments are also followed by reports that officials from the ruling political parties in both Japan and Taiwan will hold talks on security this week. In addition, US Vice President Kamala Harris is currently visiting Southeast Asia after visiting Singapore and now in Vietnam. The US Vice President’s visit is part of the US as part of the Biden administration’s efforts to re-ally with allies in the region.

On both visits, Harris targeted China, accusing Beijing of intimidation and coercion against other countries who have competing claims to the South China Sea. China also claims most of the entire South China Sea, which has angered surrounding countries. An international tribunal also ruled against Beijing’s claims, pointing out that there was no basis for their “historical” claims in international law.

The Vietnamese government has often tried to remain neutral. Hanoi has tacitly supported the US Indo-Pacific strategy because of its tough stance on China in the South China Sea. However, prior to Harris’ arrival in Vietnam, the Ambassador of China to Vietnam met in an unannounced meeting with Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh, at which the Ambassador said China would donate two million additional doses of its COVID-19 vaccine.

China has continued its pressure campaign to get Taiwan to recognize its sovereignty over the island nation. According to the Taiwanese Defense Ministry, Chinese fighter jets have again entered Taiwanese airspace recently, the August 25 incident. This will be the People’s Liberation Army’s last break-in into Taiwan’s airspace this year.
