HYDERABAD: The plans of the state government’s energy saving initiatives and the programs for renewable energies for the use of green electricity have borne fruit, as the installed solar power capacity has increased 30 times over the last six years.
The installed capacity of solar power was 120 megawatts (MW) in 2016 and rose to 3,900 MW this year, as efforts to save energy in the implementation of renewable energies increased. According to the Telangana State Renewable Energy Development Corporation Limited (TSREDCO), the state agency for the implementation of all renewable energy programs, there is a great demand for solar power in particular.
Currently there is a total of 4,400 MW of renewable energy installed in the state, of which 3,900 MW solar energy, while the remaining energy is tapped from sources such as wing energy, biomass energy, biogas, industrial waste for energy generation and minihydel projects. N Janaiah, TSREDCO vice chairman and general manager, said her goal is to promote renewable energy projects in consultation with state and central governments. “There will be more consumers of solar power in the years to come, and we would incentivize them,” he said.
TSREDCO officials said renewable generation capacity is 16,900 MW and summer demand is 13,000 MW increases. Of the 3,900 MW installed solar power, 3,700 MW are attributable to open-space solar structures and around 200 MW to solar roof panels. This 200 MW solar roof module will be installed primarily on residential buildings used by 10,167 consumers in the state, and there are 7,863 consumers based on GHMC limits alone. The Telangana Solar Power Policy 2015 was introduced by offering developers appropriate incentives and benefits promoting solar power generation.
