One by one, the Not Ready for Primetime players entered the stage together with their mothers, which they could not see due to the lockdown on last Mother’s Day. Meanwhile, Cyrus played a soulful rendition of “Light of a Clear Blue Morning,” a song recorded by her godmother Dolly Parton in 1992.
Kate McKinnon and her mother started off with their best impressions of Molly Shannon’s Mary Katherine Gallagher. Then came Aidy Bryant’s mom, who used her limited screen time to promote the third and final season of her daughter’s Hulu comedy Shrill.
Kyle Mooney’s mom asked for two Mother’s Day gifts to make up for last year while Mikey Day’s mom just wanted a hug … from Beck Bennett. Bowen Yang’s mother kissed her son and immediately washed his face with Purell. And Colin Jost’s mother almost canceled her and her son on live TV.
The Mother’s Day cold preceded the arrival of first-time host Elon Musk. During his opening monologue, the Tesla CEO and SpaceX founder revealed that he had Asperger’s Syndrome and addressed the controversy surrounding his appearance on the NBC sketch series.
