He was best known for playing Stanford Blatch on Sex and the City and was Sarah Jessica Parker’s character best friend.
The sad news was confirmed by Garson’s son Nathen, who described him as “the funniest person I know”.
“I love you so much daddy,” he said in a social media post. “Rest In Peace and I am so happy that you were able to share all of your adventures with me and that you were able to accomplish so much. I am so proud of you.
“I will always love you, but I think it’s time for you to have your own adventure. You will always be with me. I love you more than you will ever know and I am happy that you can be at peace now.
“You’ve always been the toughest, funniest, smartest person I know. I’m glad you shared your love with me. I will never forget or lose him. ”
Sex and the City executive producer, Michael Patrick King released a statement saying that “the show’s family has lost one of their own.”
“Our amazing Willie Garson,” he wrote. “His spirit and dedication to his craft were present every day on the set of ‘And Just Like That’. He was there – giving us everything – even when he was sick.
“His multitude of gifts as an actor and as a person will be missed by everyone. In this sad and dark moment, we are comforted by our memory of his joy and his light. ”
Garson’s screen partner in the series also paid tribute to the late actor.
Mario Cantone wrote on Twitter: “I couldn’t have had a more brilliant TV partner. I am devastated and just overwhelmed with sadness. Soon removed from all of us. You were a gift from the gods. Rest my sweet friend. I love you. ”
