Daughter of Charles the Bold, Marie very quickly received a heavy inheritance: the Duchy of Burgundy. Tracing the history of his family and the Burgundian conquests, Secrets d’Histoire, the magazine presented by Stéphane Bern, looks at the woman who stood up to the King of France.
She was born in Brussels and grew up in Ghent. She loses her mother when she is only eight years old and her father is not very there for her. The latter remarried three years later.
Daughter of Charles the Bold, Marie of Burgundy ascends the throne after the death of her father in January 1477 in Nancy. She is 20 years old and the sole heir to her father and to her kingdom. She must deal with the many crises shaking the duchy as well as the pressure from Louis XI, her godfather, who wants to seize her land.
While she has only been at the head of the duchy for a few days, Marie has to face the uprising in the Flemish cities and the assault launched by Louis XI. It struggles to impose itself, especially as in the court of the duchy, many former faithful of Charles succumbed to the appeal of Louis XI for a fee.
Marie must negotiate with the cities of the North so that they are at her side facing her godfather. For that, she agrees to go back on laws enacted by her father even if they undermine a little of his authority. In return, its power is recognized by all. But Louis XI manages to sow confusion in the population.

To establish her authority and succeed in countering Louis XI, Marie resolves to marry someone who can lead the war. She then married Maximilian of Habsburg, a project already envisioned by her father when she was a teenager. It is a very prestigious marriage for Marie and for the Habsburgs, it allows a significant financial contribution.
Maximilien takes the head of the mistreated Burgundian armies. He signs several victories against the French armies. But he does not understand the local organization and in particular the negotiations with the States General. Marie then takes over.
1482. As the situation begins to improve for Marie, she goes not far from Bruges for a hunting trip. During this hunt, Marie is run over by her horse after a fall. She is seriously injured. She takes advantage of the time she has left to write her will and prepare for what will happen next. She died shortly after.
