The Seattle Seahawks are the reigning NFC West champions and real Super Bowl contenders on their way into the season. But their defense may have just suffered a severe setback after a key player tore his cruciate ligament.

According to NFL insider Ian Rapoport, Seahawks linebacker Ben Burr-Kirven tore a cruciate ligament in Saturday’s game against the Denver Broncos to. Burr-Kirven has played in every game for the Seahawks since his NFL debut in 2019.

According to the report, Burr-Kirven worked with the starters this summer after never starting an NFL game. He reportedly turned out to be “a key player” who impressed at camp.

In two seasons with the Seahawks, Burr-Kirven has worked almost entirely on special teams. He has 16 career tackles, one tackle for loss and one forced fumble in 32 games.

#Seahawks LB Ben Burr-Kirven suffered a cruciate ligament rupture Saturday night, a source said after the MRI. The former five-round pick had worked with the starters and impressed as a key player at the camp. Well, set for the season.

Last year the Seattle Seahawks defense ranked 15th in the NFL in points and 22nd in yards. It was the second year in a row that the team ended up in the bottom half of the league in both categories.

The Seahawks decided not to sign longtime linebacker KJ Wright after the season, leaving his place for Ben Burr -Kirven free. Fans are already calling for Seahawks GM John Schneider to call Wright and come back.

Seattle has enough offensive firepower to overcome almost any defensive injury and win more than 10 games. But they will have a hard time achieving an impact in the postseason without improving their defensive skills.
