Images released by Roscosmos showed the launcher taking off at 1458 GMT, putting the first Russian ISS module into orbit in 11 years.

The long-planned voyage of the module to the ISS will take eight days. It is expected to dock at the nadir port of the Russian service module Zvezda on July 29, Roskosmos said in a statement in early July.

Assembly of the 20-ton Nauka multipurpose laboratory module began as early as the 1990s , but its introduction originally planned for 2007 has been continuously delayed.

Until a successful launch on Wednesday, Nauka will replace the Pirs module after twenty years in service, which is expected to detach from the ISS on Friday and into the earth’s atmosphere will burn up over the Pacific Ocean.

While Nauca’s primary purpose is research, it will also provide “additional space for workplaces and cargo storage, space for water and oxygen regeneration equipment,” Roscosmos said.

It will also “improve the conditions for the cosmonauts’ stay by providing an additional toilet and a third sleeping place for the Russian side of the ISS.
