Red Bull are keen to find Alex Albon a seat on the Formula 1 grid for 2022 but say he will continue in his role as reserve driver next year if she doesn’t make it.

On Friday, ahead of this weekend’s Belgian Grand Prix, Red Bull announced that Sergio Perez will remain Max Verstappen’s teammate next season after extending the Mexican’s contract by one year.

Pierre Gasly is expected to stay at AlphaTauri alongside Yuki Tsunoda, a move that would ultimately end Albon’s hopes of returning to F1 in Red Bull.

But Christian Horner says his team are looking to help Albon find another place on the grid, with two potential vacancies to be filled at Williams and Alfa Romeo.

“Alex is still an important part of the team, he has played a key role this year and he will continue to play that role. We are just looking at if there are any options in F1 for him next year, but what? he is not in the race, he will play the same role he has for us this year. “

Asked how likely Albon could find such a starting seat in F1, Horner replied, “you never know, but he’s a capable guy and a fast driver.”

“He’s doing a good job in DTM, he won his first race last weekend and he’s an integral part of our team. He’s doing a huge amount of work on 2022, he did the heavy lifting from the start and he plays a crucial role in that. It is certainly interesting for one of the teams who would still be looking for a driver. “
