SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Anderson Julio shot a wonderful left foot volley deep into stoppage time, giving Real Salt Lake all three points against the LA Galaxy. A goal that Real Salt Lake believers will long remember.

“It’s incredible, the timing couldn’t be better,” said interim manager Pablo Mastroeni when asked to share his emotions after Julio’s goal to explain. “You can always hope for a chance in sport, and tonight we were at the right end.”

The win lifts Real Salt Lake to fifth place in the Western Conference and four points to fourth place in Portland. In the west, the Galaxy dropped from fifth to seventh place.

Interim manager Pablo Mastroeni made a change after losing to Portland. He chose Maikel Chang on the left to replace Justin Meram.

Real Salt Lake were looking for their first win against the Galaxy of the year in the two previous meetings between the two clubs in 2021 they drew 2-2 in Utah on July 21st before the Galaxy were defeated 1-0 in California on August 4th.

Real Salt Lake started the game slowly. They couldn’t generate scoring opportunities while the Galaxy was playing much better football. The Galaxy deliberately slowed down the game so as not to get into a track meeting with Real Salt Lake. They succeeded in passing the ball through the form and pressure of Real Salt Lake and creating opportunities.

Chicharito had a number of ways to put the visitors in front but David Ochoa failed on a few occasions against the Mexican international. The best opportunity for Chicharito came mid-half when he received a ball in the top of the box, which he wrapped in his right foot, which went into the net. But Ochoa made a brilliant jump to keep the game goalless.

That changed when the last seconds of half passed when Rusnák whipped a magnificent ball in from the right that hit Damir Kreilach’s head , which gave Real Salt Lake the lead.

The second half started with more energy, as one would expect given the timing of Kreilach’s goal. Pablo Ruiz had a chance to double the lead in the 55th minute, but his left-footed shot from the box was saved.

Then, minutes later, Chicharito found himself in a one-on-one opportunity again, but Ochoa’s right leg prevented him from scoring. His shot was for the lower right corner, if it weren’t for the heroic parade of Ochoa.

“It was a really cool night,” said Ochoa when asked how special it was to play such a big role. while the club celebrated its first annual Hispanic Heritage Night. “To show a good performance tonight, especially against two great Mexican players, was satisfactory. Hopefully I can continue to perform well.”

Fortunately, Real Salt Lake continued to play aggressively and Aaron Herrera missed a one-off in the 63rd minute Opportunity to put his name on the top scorer list. His left-hand shot from just before the penalty shot flew over the crossbar and to the kick.

The galaxy would not go down swinging. Chicharito found himself in a one-on-one face-off with Ochoa, but tried to put the ball on Samuel Grandsir, but Justen Glad was able to win the ball back and clear it for a goal kick.

The Galaxy seized their chances when Chicharito found a spot on the penalty spot, Toni Datkovic turned and ended with his left foot in the lower right corner.

Mastroeni immediately went on his bench and brought in Justin Meram, Andrew Brody and Anderson Julio to replace Maikel Chang , Aaron Herrera and Rubio Rubin.

With his first touch of the game, Julio would have shaped the game almost immediately when his right-footed shot was saved by Jonathan Bond.

In the 94th minute, Julio found himself on the counterattack , immersed between two Galaxy defenders. He tossed the ball in the air with his left foot, volleyed the ball for the first time, and found the lower left corner to steal all three points.

It was one of the best goals of the season and arguably one of the biggest Goals in the 17-year history of Real Salt Lake.

Austin lost 3-0 away to Colorado against Colorado. Real Salt Lake and Austin faced each other on August 14th in a game that ended 1-0 in favor of Real Salt Lake.
