The race for the title is in full swing in Ligue 1. Woe to the vanquished? Maybe not, since the four contenders could end up in the Champions League.
Each year, to qualify directly for the Champions League – the “Holy Grail” both from a sporting and financial point of view – French clubs must finish in the first two places in Ligue 1. The third being ungrateful, since two preliminary rounds are to be crossed before hoping to reach the group stage.
However, this end of the season still portends a crazy scenario. That of seeing PSG, OL, Lille and Monaco all qualify together. The reason ? If Paris wins the Champions League for the first time in its history, it would automatically qualify for the next edition. And by finishing in fourth place in the league, at the foot of the podium, PSG would then release a ticket for another French club.
By following this scenario, only one French club would qualify in the Europa League: the winner of the Coupe de France or the fifth in Ligue 1, if this winner is already European. But given the current dynamics of PSG, 2nd in the championship with five points ahead of OL, 4th, this scenario seems very difficult to envision.
