The Iranian interior ministry unveiled on Tuesday a provisional list of seven candidates authorized to run for the presidential election in June. If the candidacy of the ultra-conservative Ebrahim Raïssi, who serves as the favorite, was accepted, that of the moderate conservative Ali Larijani was rejected.
The Iranian authorities published, Tuesday, May 25, a list of seven candidates, including five ultra-conservatives, authorized to run for the presidential election in June.
Unsurprisingly, the candidacy of former President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad (populist), already invalidated in 2017, was rejected, but against all expectations, that of Ali Larijani (conservative), former Speaker of Parliament, was also rejected, as well as that of Vice-President Eshaq Jahanguiri (reformer).
According to the list of the Ministry of the Interior published by the official agency Irna, the candidates authorized to stand for the election on June 18 are: Amirhossein Ghazizadeh-Hachémi (ultraconservative), the governor of the central bank, Abdolnasser Hemmati (reformer) , Saïd Jalili, former secretary general of the Supreme National Security Council (ultraconservative), Mohsen Mehralizadeh, former vice-president (reformer), the head of the Judicial Authority, Ebrahim Raïssi (ultraconservative), General Mohsen Rézaï, former commander in chief of the Guardians of the revolution (ultraconservative), and the deputy Aliréza Zakani (ultraconservative).
In this configuration, Ebrahim Raïssi, who obtained more than 38% of the votes in 2017, is the favorite.
The last presidential election was won by Hassan Rohani, a leading figure in the so-called moderate movement, who obtained his re-election in the first round. The Constitution prohibits him from running for a third consecutive term.
In total, nearly 600 people applied for the presidential election in mid-May.
According to the regulations, invalid candidates have the possibility of appealing until midnight, on the night of Tuesday to Wednesday.
