St. Charles Parish President Matthew Jewell has ordered mandatory evacuation for parts of the lower St. Charles Parish and recommended evacuation for the entire ward.

Hahnville – The President of St. Charles Ward. Charles, Matthew Jewell, has ordered recommended evacuation for the entire St. Charles community and mandatory evacuation for areas with limited levee protection including Bayou Gauche Island, Kerry’s Point, Cajun Paradise, and Lower Des Allemands. Residents who choose to evacuate should depart no later than Saturday evening.

The National Weather Service predicts that Hurricane Ida will be a major hurricane when it hits land and storm surges of 6-9 feet and the possibility will bring more than 10 inches of rain into St. Charles Parish.

The evacuation order begins on Friday, August 27th at 1pm. For residents in need, assisted evacuations begin on Saturday and should only be used as a last resort. Anyone requiring an assisted evacuation must call 911 today Friday August 27th at 985-783-5050.

All government buildings and the courthouse will be closed on Monday August 30th and remain closed until storm damage is assessed.

While not advisable, residents who choose to stay should prepare for power outages of more than a week that may or may not include water and sanitation Access to grocery stores and gas stations could interfere.

At this time, sandbag locations are open throughout the community. Please bring your ID, take only the bare essentials and bring your own shovel. A list of locations can be found here.

The boat docks will be closed throughout the community until sunrise on Saturday morning. The offshore trailers should be there by 6 p.m. Friday. The sector gate will also close ahead of the hurricane.
