For the Premier League, West Ham United will look for a five-game winning streak in all competitions as they travel to Villa Park on Sunday to face a strong Aston Villa side. With Aston Villa in 13th place after suffering a stinging loss to Arsenal, West Ham is in the Top 4 taking the place of Arsenal, Manchester United or Leicester. Hammers coach David Moyes will be very confident to get the three points, but Aston Villa has a lot of talent in their ranks.

Aston Villa has had a rather disappointing campaign so far compared to the high expectations at the start of the season. Sure enough, Birmingham’s side are yet to reap the rewards of promises of an encouraging transfer window with the arrival of Emiliano Buendia, Leon Bailey and Danny Ings (but the loss of Jack Grealish). Aston Villa sit 13th in the Premier League table and have fallen short of expectations in recent weeks. The home side lost (3-1) to Arsenal side Mikel Arteta last weekend and cannot afford another poor result in this game. Although Dean Smith’s decision to move Ollie Watkins down the left lane has given Villa a bit more success, Arsenal have never looked really worried about the Villans. A superb goal from Jacob Ramsey, one of Villa’s players, was not enough to endanger the Gunners in the second half.

Aston Villa will have to rely on star striker Danny Ings to secure the necessary points. However, the England striker has made nine appearances against West Ham United without scoring a Premier League goal. He will have to do well against the Hammers as his side have an incredibly difficult series of games in December, against Manchester City, Leicester City, Liverpool and Chelsea. Villa needs to take as many points as possible to maintain a good position.

West Ham, unlike Aston Villa, have been fantastic this season, and are likely a Premier League Top 4 contender this season. David Moyes’s side are also competitive in the Europa League, having won all three of their matches in that competition without even conceding a goal. To top it off, the Hammers have qualified for the Cup quarter-finals after beating Manchester City on penalties on a memorable Wednesday night. If you put all of these pieces together, it’s hard to think they’ll be outclassed by an average Aston Villa team, even away from home. West Hame can even count on the return of their star duo, Declan Rice and Michail Antonio, to the squad after being put on rest for the Carabao Cup midweek.

The 30-year-old forward has notably enjoyed an incredible career transition with the Hammers over the past two years. From a support player he grew to a star forward for West Ham. Antonio is currently third in the Premier League scoring charts this season with six goals, just behind Mohamed Salah and Jamie Vardy. In addition, with 4 assists, he directly contributed to 11 goals in 10 appearances for the Irons this season. His versatile play allows players like Jarrod Bowen and Said Benrahma, former OGC Nice and Ajaccio player, to thrive alongside him.

Villa doesn’t just have bad form to worry them about. On top of that, Dean Smith had to deal with some pretty worrying injuries. Morgan Sanson was injured before the game against Arsenal and it will be the second game the Frenchman will miss. Trezeguet remains Aston Villa’s long-term injury, having been out since early 2021. There are several uncertainties surrounding the return to the pitch of Leon Bailey, the team’s formidable Jamaican winger.

As we mentioned earlier, leaving his stars, Declan Rice and Michail Antonio to rest, allows David Moyes to field his favorite team against Aston Villa. After a short period of injury, Coufal has had a few minutes in the cup and he is looking to regain his starting place at Johnson. Alex Kral is the Hammers’ only unavailability for this game, as he has just returned to training after being isolated with the Covid-19 virus, but he might not be part of today’s squad.

West Ham, unlike Aston Villa, is in great shape after four superb consecutive results in the Cup and the Premier League. We believe Moyes’ side will have the mentality and physique to beat Villa’s midfielder and secure the victory.

The game could prove to be a competitive and close affair. Dean Smith is also expecting a positive reaction from his players. So we think both teams should be able to score a goal.

Villa is still lacking in identity, but has the firepower to give the Hammers a tough game. If Leon Bailey is available we believe he could cause some serious problems for the West Ham defense. So we will also support the draw due to the players’ desire to get a good result at Dean Smith’s request.
