JERSEY CITY, N.J. – After retiring from the Northern Trust with a diseased left ankle, Patrick Reed is now in a hospital near Houston recovering from bilateral interstitial pneumonia.

According to Golf Channel’s Todd Lewis, Reed returned on Returned to Houston Wednesday, and while his ankle was being examined by a doctor, Reed was diagnosed with bilateral interstitial pneumonia, also called double pneumonia, which is an infection in both lungs that can cause inflammation and scarring. He was admitted to the Houston Methodist Hospital early Friday morning.

“I’m on my way to recovery,” Reed said in a statement. I wish you all the best and can’t wait to get out again. ”

Reed added in his statement that his ankle, which also forced him to retire from the Wyndham Championship last week, is “OK” but he won’t be able to make the BMW Championship this week Reed is currently number 22 on the FedExCup scoreboard and is expected to drop to number 26 when the game is completed at the Northern Trust. It is possible that he will drop out of the top 30 after you BMW, which would mean that for the first time since 2014 he would not qualify for the Tour Championship.

His withdrawal from the BMW also means that he won’t qualify for the US Ryder Cup team, although he can still be one of Steve Stricker’s six captain tips announced on September 8th.
