On the night of Tuesday to Wednesday, Ugo Didier will present himself at the Tokyo Aquatic Center for the first time of the Paralympic Games. The 21-year-old Frenchman is one of the French delegation’s great medal chances over three different distances: 400m, 200m medley and 100m backstroke.

In training, Ugo Didier swims with the able-bodied. He is a member of the TOEC Dolphins, the club of another great hope in French swimming, Léon Marchand. This Tuesday, however, it is in the Paralympic Games in Tokyo that he will participate. The Frenchman was born with club feet and atrophied lower limbs. This is the reason why he opted for swimming. “Because of my handicap, I can’t run or jump. So I started swimming, it’s the only sport I could do besides wheelchair Paralympic sports.” he told L’Equipe last year. This choice allowed him to shine in the pools from the age of 16. And to qualify for the Tokyo Paralympic Games where he can aim for an incredible hat-trick. If Ugo Didier does not succeed, his young age will allow him to try his luck again in Paris. In 2024, he will only be 23 years old.
