A handful of Hollywood A-listers will leave the Oscars a quarter of a million dollars richer than they did when they arrived thanks to the incredibly decadent award night gift bags.
Better known as bucket bags, nominees in the categories of Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor, Best Supporting Actress and Best Director will receive the curated gift bags, regardless of whether they win or lose.
This year’s gift bags, managed by Los Angeles-based marketing firm Distinctive Assets, include gourmet biscuits and tequila for 24-carat vape cartridges, vegan sneakers, skin care products, shaman-blessed jewelry, and even two paid holidays.
Some of the more unusual items include a consultation with a liposuction and cosmetic surgeon, a free bathroom or kitchen remodel, breast supplements, a pet GPS tracker, an IV concierge service, and a portable hammer designed to break through car windows was designed to make it easier for pets to escape.
With 52 curated gifts, each bag is worth a little over $ 250,000. In total, the bags are worth more than $ 6.25 million.
The lucky 25 recipients this year include Olivia Colman, Glenn Close, Sacha Baron Cohen, Anthony Hopkins, Carey Mulligan, Amanda Seyfried, Riz Ahmed, Daniel Kaluuya, Viola Davis, Vanessa Kirby and Frances McDormand.
According to Distinctive Assets founder Lash Fary, who started curating gifts for the Grammys back in 2000, the bucket bags may seem excessive to some, but a lot of effort and thought goes into their planning.
“While this gift bag has an impressive six-figure value as always, that’s not our focus or our goal. A great gift has nothing to do with a price tag,” says Fary. “This year’s Everyone Wins’ gift bag is one of my favorites we’ve put together because it’s so much more than just a bag full of free items.”
Two decades later, Fary’s annual list of awards also includes the American Music Awards and Tonys.
Not only are companies giving away a staggering amount of products, but they are also paying a fee of between $ 5,000 and $ 64,000 in Distinctive Assets to have their items in the gift bags. For many companies, however, it’s a strategy that pays off.
In 2017, Viola Davis tweeted about the amazing Hawaiian resort she was vacationing (which was given in the bucket bag she received for her fencing nomination). Similarly, Mark Ruffalo posted snaps of his Italian getaway in 2015 after receiving a stay at the Grand Hotel Excelsior as part of his Foxcatcher nominee bag.
The only disadvantage? Those lucky enough to secure a bucket bag are required by U.S. law to pay income tax on the gifts at the end of the fiscal year.
