On loan from Arsenal to Olympique Marseille, William Saliba is expected to stay only one season in Ligue 1. Gunners coach Mikel Arteta has spoken about the future of the French central-defender.

His return to the Premier League is taking shape. Absent from Arsenal’s plans in the last summer transfer window, William Saliba has been sent to Olympique de Marseille this season where he is having a great start to the season. Impeccable and solid in the OM defense, the 20-year-old is now considered one of Marseille’s best summer recruits. Marseille management would even consider extending their adventure under the Phocean colors.

But William Saliba is only expected to stay one season in Marseille. First because his no-buyout loan expires next June and secondly because Arsenal have no plans to sell their defender. Asked about the subject, Mikel Arteta gave a positive answer for William Saliba.

The Gunners manager has clearly opened the door for his return to England. “Obviously, he’s our player and naturally that should happen when we sit down around a table and decide what is best for the next stage,” Mikel Arteta told a press conference this Friday.

Remember that William Saliba had a difficult first stint at Arsenal. Recruited for a check for € 30m in the summer of 2019 from AS Saint-Étienne, the young center-back has never managed to win with the Gunners. Absent from Mikel Arteta’s plans, the promising defender has been sent to reserve. William Saliba was then loaned to OGC Nice last January before joining OM this summer.

The youngster turned a corner in Marseille, winning very quickly in Jorge Sampaoli’s starting XI. His remarkable performances and performances under the Marseille colors have visibly convinced the Gunners coach, who no longer hides his intentions to get him back next June. “We are in constant contact with Saliba. Edu and Ben Knapper (the loan officer) were at the game against Paris to observe him and keep in touch. There is room for him with us, ”said Mikel Arteta.
