An economic operator in Goma was killed Monday, September 13, during an attack by armed men on the Muharo section, between Rugari and Kibumba, in the territory of Nyiragongo, in North Kivu. Civil society, which delivers this information, denounces the upsurge in attacks on this section. It indicates that burglaries of houses by armed men are regularly recorded in these villages.

Civil society in Nyiragongo testifies that the victim, Georges Castofas, 53, was an economic operator working in the transport sector. He was killed at around 4:00 p.m. local time as he was returning from Rutshuru to Goma on his motorbike.

The criminals allegedly took his bag and his phone and abandoned the motorcycle at the scene of the crime.

Civil society is asking for logistical reinforcement from the Armed Forces of the DRC (FARDC) based on this axis to face this growing insecurity.

According to Nyiragongo Civil Society President Mambo Kawaya, another Rutshuru economic operator escaped an attack at the same location a few days ago.

Mambo Kawaya calls for more adequate measures to be taken to secure travelers on this route.

Several attacks of the kind have already been recorded on this axis of Nyiragongo, among others the one which cost the life, last February, to the Italian Ambassador to the DRC with a delegation from the World Food Program (WFP).
