Texas Head Coach Jimo Fisher and his staff know a thing or two about the teams facing each other at the national championship.

Fisher’s Aggies defeated the Alabama Crimson Tide 41-38 with a field goal on October 9 as the rules expired. According to the Associated Press, he declared his confidence in his team’s ability to beat the tide last spring.

With that win, Fisher became the only former assistant coach to Tide head coach Nick Saban to beat his former boss. Georgia head coach Kirby Smart appears to be doing the same against Alabama, but the tide rolled Georgia 41:24 in last month’s SEC championship game.

Georgia dominated its competition except Alabama this season. That included a convincing 34-11 win over Michigan in the semifinals of the College Football Playoffs on December 31. The Bulldogs defense returned to their elite this season with less than 14 points allowed.

“I think the University of Georgia Kirby program is likely one of the most elite programs in the country,” Saban told Casagrande . “… And probably just looking to the future, probably for some time to come.”

Fisher will be providing some glimpses of the Georgia team this season during the broadcast in the movie room, even though Texas A&M won’t be against them this season Bulldogs competed.

The other SEC teams had several opponents in common, and the Aggies coach may have seen Georgia in the movie versus South Carolina. The Bulldogs played the Gamecocks on September 18th and the Aggies faced the Gamecocks over a month later on October 23rd.

“This rematch between two great programs has the chance to be one of the most exciting national championship games”, Fisher said in a press release from A&M in Texas. “As the coaching staff, we look forward to breaking the game in the movie room for ESPN.”

Georgia’s elite defense will see another attack on Heisman Trophy winner Bryce Young and a high profile offensive in Alabama. The Bulldogs also have to watch out for the tide running attack that found its way into the SEC championship.

“That’s the ultimate challenge,” said Smart of Alabama’s ability to run and hit the ball through Casagrande to throw.

Bulldogs quarterback Stetson Bennett will try to change things for his team from the last meeting. But he’ll have to do it against a Tide defense that brought the formerly unbeaten Cincinnati to a standstill at 27-6 in the semifinals on December 31st.
