While he never seems to have had the favors of Joan Laporta since his presidential election last March, Antoine Griezmann could finally leave FC Barcelona in the last hours of the transfer window although everything has suggested lately that he was going to stay within the club culé. Next destination, Atletico de Madrid?
Only one season after his “Decision”, Antoine Griezmann landed at FC Barcelona. However, only two years after his arrival, the French world champion still does not seem to be unanimous either with the administration Joan Laporta or with his own supporters. On Sunday, the Frenchman was whistled by Camp Nou during FC Barcelona’s narrow victory against Getafe (2-1). An attitude that did not leave indifferent Ronald Koeman who conveyed the following message in the wake of a press conference. “As a coach, I can never condone the public whistling one of our players. You can always criticize a player if he doesn’t have the right attitude, but Antoine doesn’t, Koeman pleaded. He certainly didn’t have the efficiency required, he wasn’t great, but it’s just a game. Like all attackers, he has days when he scores and other days when he can’t find the spaces. But if a player has the right attitude, you can’t ask for much more. The team couldn’t find the spaces for him either. We did not allow him to create opportunities ”. However, President Joan Laporta, elected on March 7, would not share the same sentiment regarding Griezmann. And throughout the summer, although rumors have calmed down considerably lately, Antoine Griezmann has been announced about leaving Manchester City, Juventus, PSG and especially Atletico de Madrid. Griezmann’s big comeback to the Colchoneros caused a lot of ink to flow in the Iberian press and initially via a player swap with Saul Niguez. Something that did not happen as the Spaniard heads to Chelsea via a buyout loan. And most recently, through an exchange with Joao Felix. Something that shouldn’t happen for a reason either.
According to SPORT, Enrique Cerezo would not be inclined to satisfy the demand of his coach Diego Simeone by bringing back Antoine Griezmann if he were to give up Joao Felix at the same time. However, the FC Barcelona striker has reportedly over the weeks expressed his desire to return to Madrid to his former team-mates, still according to Iberian media. And the Cadena SER confirmed the trend in the Atletico de Madrid president’s firm stance: no return from Griezmann if he resulted in Joao Felix’s departure. What complicate this operation? Not really since FC Barcelona would be ready to make a huge effort to part ways with Antoine Griezmann, and without compensation.
According to information leaked by L’Équipe in recent hours, FC Barcelona and Atletico de Madrid will continue to exchange on Tuesday in order to reach a full deal for Antoine Griezmann to make his comeback at Wanda Metropolitano. In fact, discussions would revolve around a dry transfer approaching the € 50m mark. A significant sum which would be likely to throw a chill in other circumstances on the smooth running of this operation due to the financial crisis affecting Spanish football. Nevertheless, Barca are said to be ready, according to the sports daily, to make it easier for Atletico by offering a buyout loan to be lifted in a year. Saul Niguez’s departure for Chelsea could speed things up in this operation.
